Know what the leak investigation is expected to deliver.

An investigation can identify a source, narrow an area, or establish what needs further access. It is not always the same appointment or price as a repair. Before booking, ask what the diagnostic charge covers and how findings will be explained if no source is confirmed during the visit.

Define the question being investigated

“Water appears below this shower after use” is a more focused starting point than “check all plumbing.” Share the location, timing, prior work, and known access limits. The provider can then explain whether its scope matches the problem or whether another specialty is needed.

Ask whether the visit includes visible plumbing, concealed-system investigation, appliance connections, or buried service work. Equipment capability and staff availability are provider-specific. This website does not verify them for the recipient of the shared phone number.

Ask how confidence will be reported

The findings should separate what was observed, what was measured, and what remains suspected. A moisture reading or image can support investigation without proving an exact break location. Ask what additional evidence would be needed before opening a wall or ground surface.

Do not choose solely on a promise of no disturbance. Some sources can be found with existing access; others require further work. The important question is whether the proposed step is justified and authorized, not whether one technique is described as universally precise.

Set the authorization boundary

Clarify whether the fee includes only investigation or also a defined minor repair. If access or replacement becomes necessary, ask how the new scope and price will be presented. Name the person who can approve changes, especially if the owner will not be onsite.

Do not provide blanket permission for unspecified demolition because someone is already at the property. Immediate safety measures and a larger repair project should be explained as separate decisions whenever circumstances allow.

Keep a result even if the source is unresolved

Request a concise record of areas examined, conditions checked, findings, and limits. That record helps another provider continue appropriately if the problem lies outside the first company's scope. See photo notes for useful evidence you can prepare safely.
