Separate the stages
Ask each provider to distinguish investigation, temporary control, permanent repair, and restoration. Record any visit charge that remains payable if you decline further work. A credit offered toward a later repair should be clearly described by the provider, not assumed from the word “estimate.”

Identify the work and exclusions
Compare the component or pipe length, materials, access area, disposal, water interruption, permits, testing, and final condition. If drywall, paving, landscaping, or electrical work is excluded, note who will arrange it. The omissions can affect the total project more than a difference in the plumbing labor line.

Match the business to the agreement
Keep the legal name and applicable credential information with each proposal. Verify the actual provider through Oregon's official resources, especially if a scheduling or referral contact is different from the company doing the work. Know who will bill you and who handles concerns afterward.

Plan for conditions that are not yet visible
An estimate can identify an allowance or a decision point without pretending hidden conditions are known. Ask what would trigger a change, how it will be documented, and who may approve it. Keep any revised agreement with the original proposal so the final invoice has a clear history.
